Why Detox is Important, Your Body’s Symptoms Are A Cry For Help!

If you are reading this, you are probably asking yourself, “Why is detox important?”  Chances are you’ve heard it somewhere that detox is vital to our health, but what exactly does it mean?  What are we detoxing from, and what will be the benefits of detoxing in the long run?

In this article, I will discuss all of the answers above. You will have a good understanding of why detox is important, things we need to detox from and the benefits that regular detox will have on your health in the long run.

Are you ready to understand a tool that can radically change the way you feel about your body, mind, and spirit?  Let’s dive in.

Why is detox important?

In order to answer this question, we have to first understand what we would need to be detoxing from. The truth is, we live in a world where toxins are EVERYWHERE.  Chances are they are even in your most beloved food products. Yikes!

Yep! Unfortunately, today we live in a toxic soup where even the foods that are supposed to provide us life and vitality are often doing more harm than good. Let’s take your average boxed food items, for example, ever see the words natural flavors or artificial colorings?  If you took the time to research what “natural flavors” are, chances are you probably wouldn’t feel as good about the fact that they used the word “natural.”

Natural & Artificial Flavors

Natural flavorings can be derived from a multitude of products including a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products (yep sorry vegans, you could be consuming a meat product and not even know it).  These products can come from GMO’s, animals which have been fed with growth hormones and pesticide ridden crops like corn, soy or wheat. The truth is FDA has yet to define what natural flavorings are, therefore they are largely unregulated. (1)(2)(3)

Where are the blueberries in my purple colored ‘blueberry’ yogurt?

Ever wondered what happened to the actual blueberries? Natural flavoring can be a chemical derived from blueberries, enhanced in a lab and added to your food.  When it comes down to it, natural & artificial flavorings aren’t really that different.  They often consist largely of solvents and preservatives which have their own potential harmful effects.

While limited studies on these flavorings and their effect on our health have been conducted, what we do know is that these flavors are used to enhance the taste profile of our foods, drastically, changing the way we taste foods today.  People who consume large amounts of packaged processed foods often find real foods dull and unattractive.  This creates diets that are based on intense flavors instead of nutritional value which traps people in a cycle of cravings and dependency which is exactly what companies want.

Artificial Food Colorings

ADHD, ADD, behavioral problems, cancer and food sensitivities have all been linked to artificial food dyes as they have been known carcinogens since 1985.  The FDA calculated that ingestion of free benzidine raises the cancer risk to just under the “concern” threshold; however, they did not take into account that our enzymes release bound benzidine. (4) Considering that today packaged processed foods make up for over 70% of the marketplace, the likely hood of our ingestion is much higher than may have been previously reported. (5)

Pesticides & Preservatives

The job of a pesticide is to kill, therefore in their very nature; they are toxic.  They have been known to create oxidative stress in the body which produce free radicals and alter our antioxidant defense mechanisms. (6)  They have been associated with causing a myriad of health problems including ADHD, headaches, nausea, cancer, hormone disruption and more. (7)

Pesticides are not only limited to our foods, but they are also found in our cleaning products, water, soil, air and products we put on our body.  In fact, our skin has become a major source of pesticide absorption today.  It is one of the largest organs in the body, and everything you put on it goes in it. (8)

Preservatives are another issue which have been known to have harmful effects on our health, related to issues including headaches, dermatitis, allergies and even cancer. (9)  The job of a preservative is to kill bacteria, which means they can also kill our own healthy gut bacteria, drastically changing the delicate chemistry of our gut. Our gut bacteria is one of the major lines of defense in our body. When we disrupt the microbiome, we are more susceptible to harmful microorganisms which increase the likelihood of disease in the human body. (10)

So why is detox important to our health?

Hopefully, many of your questions surrounding the word detox have been answered. Detox is important because it helps us to eliminate the buildup of harmful substances in our body. These substances are in everything that we put into our body; on our body, in our water and our air. By reducing our toxic load, we reduce our susceptibility to common symptoms all too many of us face (gas, fatigue, headaches, bloating, etc.) and our risk for serious diseases.

How to detox?

After gathering all of that rather alarming information, your next question might very well be how to detox?

There are many ways to detox. Today, I am going to talk about how to detox naturally, and in a way that is least expensive, and a process you can start today.

How to Detox- 6 Simple Ways to Detox Today

#1 Get rid of all packaged processed food.

As the S.A.D. is majorly built on packaged processed foods, this might be a hard one for many to swallow. The truth is if you want to reduce your symptoms of imbalance (headache, bloating, constipation, weight gain) and decrease your risk of serious disease, getting rid of the food that causes these problems is the first step.

#2 Get rid of chemical ridden household products

This includes candles, air fresheners, cleaning products and certain soaps. There are plenty of ways to clean your house naturally. Essential oils, vinegar, and peroxides make for some of the best cleaning products around.  In fact, they are often cheaper and have health benefits when applied both externally and internally (be sure to always use therapeutic grade.)

#3 Swap out the hazardous beauty products for the natural ones

This means makeups, hair products, skin products and anything else you put in or on your body. I think you are beautiful just the way you are, go natural; it’s easier, cheaper and better for you!

#4 Do an internal cleanse

There are many ways to cleanse, and there is a wide variety of ways to approach this from the all to popular Master Cleanse, to juice cleanses and more.  I personally suggest a bone broth and juice cleanse which will give the digestive system a break and provide you with sustainable energy throughout the day. Be aware that just juicing or fasting does not address other potential areas which might need detox such as heavy metals, lower intestine and parasite cleansing.  I have a 3 step guide to detox for everyone’s success which you can find here.

#5 Buy Organic & Non-GMO

Although the organic industry has its complications and problems on its own, buying foods that are labeled Organic decreases your exposure to GMO’s, pesticide and antibiotic ridden foods.  Organic foods are also known to contain more nutrients than those that are non-organic, giving you a bigger bang for your buck. In the beginning, it might be more expensive, but in the long term it could save you from costly medical bills, prescriptions and suffering for years.

#6 Reduce stress

Stress increases the total load on the body which brings down our immunity and increases our susceptibility to disease.  Mental and emotional stressors can cause just as much damage as the external pollutants around us. It’s important that every day we take the time to relax, release and detox from stress. It’s important to remember that covering up the stress through alcohol, smoking or other addictive habits does not accurately address the stress but rather temporarily covers it, burying it deeper inside the body. Taking preventative action on stress like doing meditations, drinking adaptogenic tea and engaging in other healing modalities such as massage, reiki and acupuncture are some of the best ways to heal and manage stress long term. Detox is an incredible way to help to heal the body and prevent disease.

Detoxing is an important practice that if done regularly can drastically reduce and eliminate common symptoms all too many of us suffer with.  It’s important to remember that detox is an ongoing and preventative practice.  It doesn’t do the body any good to go through the efforts of detoxing the body only to introduce a bunch of toxic chemicals right back in.

Detoxing can reduce imbalances in the body which can manifest as:

Weith Gain

Fatigue

Brain Fog

Irritability

Bloating

Gas

Gut issues

Hormonal issues

Skin issues

Although at first, the task of detox can seem daunting, the results that will be gained can be life changing. Today in a world full of toxins, it’s important to do what we can to take our health back into our own hands. Your dollar is the strongest voice you have, and every time you use it, you vote. Together let’s take a stand, spend wisely and vote for health.  I’d love to hear your comments, questions and any feedback you may have, please share with me your comments below.
